Industry Insights
In 2023, General Motors (GM) maintained its lead as the top-selling automaker in the U.S., outpacing Toyota with about 2.6 million units sold, a 14.1% increase from 2022. The U.S. auto industry experienced its best year since the pandemic, with total new vehicle sales reaching approximately 15.5 million units, nearly 17% of which were electrified vehicles. Despite challenges like high vehicle prices and interest rates, robust demand led to a strong recovery, with U.S. consumers spending over half a trillion dollars on new vehicles for the third consecutive year. Electrified vehicle sales, including hybrids and EVs, saw significant growth, with Toyota's electrified sales up 30.4%. GM expects continued strong demand into 2024, forecasting total industry sales of 16 million units. However, analysts caution that high interest rates may impact demand, particularly for EVs, which are expected to account for around 10% of total auto sales in 2023
Ford, leveraging its century-long experience in truck manufacturing, has updated the prices and trim packages for its 2024 F-150 Lightning, the best-selling electric pickup in the US. After outperforming competitors like Rivian's R1T in a record fourth quarter, Ford is responding to growing demand with strategic adjustments. The 2024 Lightning's base Pro trim now starts at $54,995, reflecting a $5K increase, while the XLT trim sees a $10,000 rise, starting at $64,995. Both trims offer a 240-mile range. The Lariat trim is now priced at $79,495, with a 320-mile range, up $2K from last year. Interestingly, the Platinum models, including a matte black version, have received price cuts, with the Platinum starting at $84,995 ($7K less) and the black version at $92,995 ($5K less). Ford also introduces the new "Flash" trim at $73,495, aiming to hit a "sweet spot" in range, technology, and features. Despite the price adjustments, all 2023 and 2024 F-150 Lightning models with an MSRP under $80,000 remain eligible for a $7,500 EV tax credit.
