This Week in Automotive History
This week, we're taking a trip down memory lane to September 30, 1966, when the Mercury Cougar was introduced to the automotive world for the 1967 model year. Initially conceived as a more luxurious counterpart to the Ford Mustang, the Cougar made a splash with its unique features like hidden headlights and a split front grille. The car quickly gained a reputation for blending sportiness with luxury, a niche that it would continue to occupy in various forms over the years.

First edition Mercury Cougar
The Cougar underwent several transformations throughout its life, each aimed at adapting to the changing market landscape. For instance, the third generation in 1974 marked a shift towards a more comfort-oriented approach, influenced by the oil crisis and changing consumer demands. By the time the eighth and final generation rolled around in 1999, the Cougar aimed to recapture some of its earlier sporty essence, albeit on a modern platform.

Eighth generation 1999 Cougar
Despite its many changes, what remained constant was the Cougar's ability to resonate with the public. Whether it was the high-performance XR-7 models or the more luxurious trims, the Cougar had something for everyone. Its production may have ended in 2002, but the Cougar's legacy as a versatile and adaptive vehicle lives on, serving as a testament to the ever-changing but always fascinating world of automobiles.

Final edition Mercury Cougar
By revisiting the Cougar's storied history, we're reminded that in the automotive world, the ability to adapt and evolve is invaluable. The Cougar may no longer be in production, but its impact and adaptability make it a timeless icon.
Industry Insights
Approximately 4,600 Ford workers at the Chicago Assembly Plant have joined the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike against Detroit's Big Three automakers—Ford, GM, and Stellantis. The move adds about 7,000 more workers to the ongoing strike, bringing the total number of striking auto workers to 25,000. UAW President Shawn Fain accuses Ford and GM of refusing to make meaningful progress in negotiations. The union's demands include a 36% pay increase, pension benefits, and greater job security. Automakers argue that meeting these demands would make them less competitive. The strike has garnered support from President Biden and is funded by an $825 million UAW fund.
Volkswagen is restructuring its Germany-based production network to focus on electric vehicles and improve efficiency. The company's Board of Management has informed its Supervisory Board about vehicle allocation plans through 2028 as part of its performance program ACCELERATE forward | Road to 6.5. The Wolfsburg plant will ramp up production of the ID.3 in 2023 and introduce a new all-electric SUV in 2026. The plant will also continue to produce the Golf and the new Tiguan generation. VW aims to streamline production by bundling vehicles based on the same architecture, thereby saving on integration costs. The Osnabrück plant will continue its partnership with Porsche and maintain production of combustion vehicles like Arteon and T-Roc convertible.
