A new report reveals that the UK's automotive sector faces a looming crisis unless it receives substantial public investment in battery manufacturing. The study, conducted by the think tank Common Wealth, emphasizes the need for "gigafactories" to produce batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). To secure the industry's future and create up to 33,000 jobs, the UK must increase battery manufacturing capacity from 2 gigawatt-hours per year (GWh/a) to 80 GWh/a by 2030. The report suggests that the government should provide a substantial portion of the estimated £100 billion investment required over the next eight years, as relying solely on the private sector could lead to offshoring jobs and capacity. This investment could create over 33,000 new jobs and position the UK as a major player in the EV market
