This Week In Automotive History
The Birth of the First Lincoln Continental
In a historic moment, the first Lincoln Continental prototype emerged on December 13, 1939. This event began an automotive legend that would symbolize the 1940s and shape luxury car design.

1939 Lincoln Continental
Pioneering Engineering and Design
The original Lincoln Continental was a groundbreaking achievement in automotive engineering and design. Conceived by designer Bob Gregorie, it responded to Edsel Ford's desire for a luxurious personal vehicle. The car's distinctive two-door design, absence of running boards, and convertible top set it apart. It was handcrafted, sitting 7 inches lower than the standard Lincoln.
A Legacy Begins
From a limited run of 24 models in 1939 to 400 in 1940, the Lincoln Continental evolved quickly. Machine-pressing dies were introduced in 1941. However, World War II impacted production and continued with updates in 1946. By the end of 1948, the Continental's journey was over due to shifting company goals.
Revivals and Transitions
The Continental name re-emerged in 1956 as a separate marque, producing the prestigious Continental Mark II for two years. Later, it transformed into a massive sedan but faced challenges. In 2017, a revival brought V6 options, but the sedan ended production in 2020, leaving the door open for potential future comebacks.

Industry Insights
Tesla requires a $1,000 non-refundable "early access deposit" from Cybertruck reservation holders, aiming to filter out serious buyers. The fee, deducted from the final price, is in addition to a higher fully refundable reservation fee of $250. Although some are frustrated, it helps gauge actual demand amid price increases. Tesla can plan production accordingly, ensuring the most enthusiastic customers receive their vehicles first. This move sparks debate—smart strategy or a money grab by Elon Musk?
GM's Cruise unit is cutting its workforce by 24% following a fatal accident that led to the suspension of self-driving testing. The layoffs, impacting 900 of its 3,800 employees, are primarily in commercial operations and corporate functions. Cruise, which has been facing financial turmoil, saw its CEO and co-founder resign last month. GM supports the employment decisions, emphasizing a "more deliberate go-to-market path" and a safety-first approach. The incident, which resulted in the suspension of testing, has also led to regulatory scrutiny, including potential fines and sanctions, challenging the nascent driverless car industry's need for public trust and regulatory cooperation.
